The BMW X5 and the Mercedes GLE. These two SUVs are both powerful and luxurious. Both vehicles are similar in size and comparable in features, performance, pricing, and more. But does one outperform the other in this matchup?

BMW X5 vs. Mercedes GLE: Specs

The BMW X5 and the Mercedes-Benz GLE have three available powertrains across different trim levels. The BMW X5 can be in five trims: the sDrive40i, xDrive40i, xDrive45e, Black Vermilion Edition, and M50i. The Black Vermilion edition has several impressive features and aesthetic innovations and is only available in minimal quantities in the US.

The sDrive40i and xDrive40i models are powered by a turbocharged inline-six engine with 335 horsepower. The xDrive45e is a hybrid model, and it has an electric motor that accompanies the inline-six engine. Combined, the two achieve 389 horsepower. Finally, the top trims feature a twin-turbo V8 engine with an impressive 528 horsepower - enough to send the SUV rocketing down the road.

Mercedes-Benz offers three trims for the GLE: the GLE350, GLE450, and GLE580. A turbocharged four-cylinder engine drives the GLE350 and reaches 255 horsepower. The GLE450 enjoys a hybrid powertrain, like the xDrive45e, but only achieves 362 horsepower. The top-of-the-line GLE580 is also a hybrid, and the battery and motor join forces with a 4.0L V8 engine to output 504 horsepower.

In terms of size, the two SUVs are very similarly sized. In almost every dimension, the X5 and the GLE measure within inches of each other. While the Mercedes-Benz looks to be the smaller of the two, both SUVs are 193.4 inches long and ride on 117-inch wheelbases. Regarding cargo space, the X5 and GLE size up to almost identical.

Other similarities you can expect with these two models include all-wheel drive, Sport driving modes, and paddle shifters on their steering wheels. One noticeable difference, however, is the transmission: the BMW X5's Zf-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission is more responsive than the Mercedes-Benz GLE's nine-speed unit.

Mercedes GLE vs. BMW X5: Performance and Mileage

While both vehicles seem very similar at first, the Benz and the BMW feel different as soon as you get behind the wheel, with the BMW outperforming the GLE, even while the Mercedes-Benz has a more robust engine on paper. The GLE also feels smaller and lighter on the road than the BMW, even though it weighs 265 pounds more.

The BMW X5 sDrive40i and xDrive40i get 23 miles per gallon in combined city and highway driving. According to the EPA, or the Environmental Protection Agency, the X5 xDrive45e plug-in hybrid rates just 20 MPG combined, but its 24-kilowatt-hour battery pack provides an estimated 31 miles of all-electric driving range. The X5 M50i rates 18 MPG in combined driving, while the X5 M rates 15 MPG combined with or without the Competition package.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 gets 22 MPG in combined city and highway driving, regardless of drivetrain. The GLE 450 rates 23 MPG combined. The GLE 580 also rates 19 MPG combined. The GLE 53 Coupe rates 20 MPG in combined driving, while the heavier GLE 53 SUV gets 19 MPG.

With the optional tow hitch, the BMW X5 has a 7,200-pound tow limit with most versions. The X5 PHEV is limited to only 5,925 pounds. For the Mercedes-Benz GLE and GLE Coupe, you can find a tow limit of 7,700 when properly equipped.

The GLE falls flat compared to the sportier BMW, which feels better balanced with more traction. The X5 is also easier to drive when pushing its limits. BMW offers an optional $1,000 air-spring suspension instead of the standard steel coils that provides impressive stability and smooths out bumps without affecting your driving line or your confidence on the road.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE also offers optional air springs and adaptive dampers, but they only hold up somewhat as well as the BMW's. The GLE's handling starts to crumble at faster speeds, making the BMW a better choice at higher rates.

Price Comparison Between the BMW X5 and Mercedes GLE

This midsize luxury SUV seats five but has optional third-row seats to seat seven. If you want to buy the BMW X5, you can expect to pay between $59,400 to $105,900, not including the $950 destination charge. The X5 accommodates a range of budgetary needs with this pricing, from those looking for a more affordable BMW to those looking to splurge.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE can range in price from $55,700 to $80,000, not including the $1,050 destination charge. The GLE is slightly more affordable, while the BMW offers more options on the higher end. The GLE comes in two different body styles, the standard GLE SUV and the GLE Coupe, which has a coupe-inspired, fastback roofline. Both come with standard seating for five, while the GLE has an optional third row that increases the capacity to seven.

Both vehicles offer similar passenger and cargo space, with almost no difference in head- and legroom in the front seats. This means that, ultimately, many people's decisions will be based on personal preference for design and comfort.

Compared to other BMWs, the X5 has a distinct character to the interior, with a wide range of interior materials available to create a more modern vibe or a more traditional environment. The X5 M trim can even have an edgy performance vibe.

Seating comfort in the X5 is exceptional in the front, while the second-row bench offers good bolstering and support that decreases with taller adults. But, with an optional 4-zone climate control system, everyone in the vehicle can enjoy their preferred temperature.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE, like most Mercedes-Benz vehicles, offers an ambiance of old-world luxury that is surprising with a digital instrument panel and infotainment interface. Mercedes GLE and BMW X5: Infotainment and Technology

You can expect to find pretty modern technology in most modern vehicles, and the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE are no different.

The BMW X5 has a 12.3-inch touchscreen interface infotainment system backed by the iDrive7 platform. Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration is standard, and the factory navigation system is updated wirelessly. USB ports are built into the backs of the front seats for convenient access for passenger charging.

Additional options for included features include Gesture Control which lets you use hand signals to accept phone calls or adjust the volume, as well as a Harman Kardon sound system for premium audio.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE also has a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment interface backed by the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) platform. Wired smartphone integration is standard, and voice recognition is among the best in midsize luxury SUVs. The GLE also comes with a wireless charging pad.

Safety and Features in the BMW X5 and Mercedes GLE

When it comes to the BMW X5, even the standard X5 is chock full of luxury features. All models enjoy heated and power-adjustable front seats, a panoramic sunroof, and customizable interior lighting. Drivers can opt for features like massaging seats, a remote start system, and leather seats and accents. These do, of course, increase the price of the vehicle.

Other features for the X5 include remote access features that allow you to remotely lock the doors, start the engine, and more. The X5 also offers a Wi-Fi hotspot, although prices and availability can change, so you'll need to manage your services via a BMW Connected Drive account.

The X5 is quite roomy, with three rows of seating and ample cargo capacity. It also enjoys the modern connectivity features that one would hope to find in new vehicles, including Apple Carplay and Android Auto. These are accented by twin 12.3-inch touchscreens, which add a modern touch to the reserved and stylish interior.

The BMW X5 also comes with these standard features and advanced driving assistant aids:
