BMW X5 vs Lexus RX

BMW launched the X5 in 2000, and Lexus the RX in 1998, long before most customers made the switch from cars to SUVs. Both companies are now widely recognized as trendsetters in the luxury SUV space. If you find yourself in the market for a new vehicle and you're looking for a midsize luxury SUV, you’ll no doubt want to take a look at these vehicles.

Overview

BMW

Both models are midsize luxury SUVs, and the BMW X5 accommodates 5 total travelers including the driver. An upgrade with a third row of seats is available that would increase the seating capability to seven.

The X5 comes in four different trims. The base model X5 sDrive40i has rear-wheel drive and the X5 xDrive40i comes with all-wheel drive. Another trim level is the X5 xDrive45e, a plug-in hybrid vehicle that comes standard with all-wheel drive and combines the 6-cylinder combustion engine with an electric motor and battery pack to get the best of both worlds. The next trim level, the X5 M50i, is great for drivers searching for higher levels of performance with a V8 engine. Last but not least is the X5 M that doubles down on performance capabilities.

Lexus

RX

Much like the X5, the Lexus RX also features standard seating for five, while the RX L increases the length of the vehicle to make room for a third row of seating that will accommodate seven. Because the third row doesn’t offer too much additional space and is rather small, most drivers won’t find themselves utilizing it on a daily basis, so the RX L ends up mostly providing additional cargo space.

The Lexus RX comes in RX 350, RX 350 F Sport, RX 350L, RX 450h, RX 450h F Sport, and RX 450hL models, offering quite a variety of choices for prospective buyers. The RX 350 models feature a V6 engine and give buyers a choice between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. The RX 450h models are conventional hybrids without plug-in capability that all have standard all-wheel drive.
