Germany has a rich history of some of the world’s original automobiles. The first motorcar was made in Germany. German engineering is synonymous with performance and impeccable design. Originally called Bavarian Motor Works, Bayerische Motoren Werke in German, BMW has been producing cars since 1928. From 1928 until now, BMW has been known for producing luxury cars that push fast speeds quickly and look good while doing it. BMW E31 8Series

First, the BMW E31 8Series. This car had a number of features that were radical for it's original production run in 1990. The onboard computer was one of the main ones, pushing the boundaries at a time when computers were more cumbersome than today. The E31 also featured a powerful V12 engine, pop-up headlights, and a seat memory function. A masterpiece of the 90s, the E31 stands out as a premier car from a newer era that can still be considered classic.


1986 BMW M3

The BMW M3 has been offered since its initial release in 1986 as the performance-tuned trim of the BMW 3 series. This makes the 1986 E30 M3 the perfect classic collectors car. This car was uniquely powerful for the time. Why else do people today pay more than $60k over the original sticker price for this classic car? For one, the classic BMW design mixed with precisely tuned parts of the car, including a spoiler, meld together into something not only representative of the era, but representative of performance tuned BMWs as a whole.


BMW 2002

The BMW 2002, somewhat inappropriately named, was released in 1968. A paragon of the classic BMW style, the 2002 stands out with a boxy, classy aura that makes other cars of that era look awkward and behind the times. The BMW 2002 is a perfect example of BMWs ability to blend luxury with performance. It featured BMW’s first mass-produced turbocharged engine in 1973. The 2002 turbo is thus especially coveted, with fewer units sold as their first mass turbocharged model.


BMW E9 3.0CSL

This list would be remiss without covering the BMW E9 3.0CSL Batmobile. The BMW E9 had been in production since 1968, when the high performance, lightweight 3.0CSL came to market. This car used aluminum sidings and other lightweight features to increase the performance of the car. The batmobile name comes from the 3.0CSLs sold with the full aero package with wings on the rear. While technically not street legal at the time, the wings left the factory uninstalled so the drivers could do so themselves. Today, the E9 3.0CSLs are a classic look into how BMW pushed the envelope, selling cars fit for racing to the masses. With a distinct feel and design these rare cars fetch a high price on today’s market and make an excellent addition to any collector’s garage.
