The Details

Right away you'll notice the kidney grille is very prominent and is the largest ever designed for BMW. The 2019 X7 gets 21-inch alloy wheels (and available 22-inch wheels), a full set of adaptive LED headlights in the front and LED lighting in the rear. You'll also notice that the rear doors are much larger making it easier for third-row passengers to get in and out of the vehicle.

The 2019 X7 will come standard with three-row seven-passenger seating, and available second-row captain chairs bringing seating down to six people. Cargo space is ample with 48.6 cubic feet with both the second and third in the upright positions, and 90.4 cubic feet with both seats folded flat. Lane Departure Warning. Speed Limit Information, Frontal Collision Warning, and four-zone climate control will be standard features.

Engine choices will be familiar to those of you are diehard BMW fans. The xDrive40i gets the 3.0-liter inline six that delivers 335 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque. The xDrive50i gets the 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 delivering 456 horsepower and 479 lb-ft. Both paired with the automatic eight-speed transmission and get a top speed of 130 mph-you definitely won't feel like you're driving a family SUV.

That eight-speed automatic transmission has been upgraded with new torsional dampers to improve shift quality and comfort. The transmission also works in unison with the navigation system, adaptive cruise control, road sensors, and cameras to keep the vehicle in the proper gear for road conditions and traffic speeds.

A standard two-axle air suspension, a Dynamic Damper system, and Active Comfort Drive help to maintain side-to-side forces, keeping the vehicle upright around sharp corners. The optional M Sport Differential for the xDrive50i is offered in both the Dynamic Handling Package and the Off-Road Package, splits power side-to-side for slippery situations. When these systems are combined with the Off-Road Package or Dynamic Handling Package, it can lower the vehicle for cargo loading, or raise the vehicle when off-roading.

All-wheel drive is standard on the 2019 X7 SUVs. Rear steering is also standard; this system automatically turns the rear wheels phase with the front wheels at high speeds, and out of phase at slow speeds.

For now, there are six color options for the interior: alpine white, black, black sapphire, mineral white, arctic gray and Vermont bronze. Right now, it looks like black SensaTec vinyl or leather will be available upholstery options. There will also be glass accents on the start/stop button, gearshift lever, iDrive controller, and radio volume knob just like on the X5.

The Cold Weather Package includes front and rear heated seats, heated front seat armrests, heated steering wheel, and five-zone climate control. Additional available options include remote engine start and a tow hitch. The Premium Package includes soft-close automatic doors, rear electric side window shades, heated and cooled cupholders, head-up display, premium audio, and gesture control to access radio, navigation and phone options with the wave of your hand.

The 2019 X7 will get a 12.3-inch screen for iDrive infotainment that includes navigation, media, and smartphone integration.

The 2019 X7 xDrive40i comes standard with blind-spot detection, lane departure warning, rear collision warning, frontal collision warning, and pedestrian warning with city collision mitigation (alerting drivers of cyclists), cross traffic alert rear, and speed limit information.

The 2019 X7 xDrive50i gets everything the xDrive 40i gets plus Parking Assistant Plus providing a Top View camera, Panorama View, and 3D View system takes care of the steering, shifting and braking when parking. Back Up Assistant remembers the last 50 yards of maneuvers during parking and repeats the same steps to get out of a tight spot.

Head-Up Display, Active Driving Assistant Professional with Active Lane Keeping Assistant, and Extended Traffic Jam Assistant for limited access highways.

Active Driving Assistant Professional is BMW's semi-autonomous driving system that takes over driving at speeds below 37 mph. Although there's no need for the driver to touch the steering wheel or pedals, we recommend drivers still pay attention to traffic. All of these tech and safety features can be updated wirelessly via BMW's Remote Software Upgrade.
